This is getting better. Every day we add dishes, as you do, and every day I am getting them done and clearing some back log. My kitchen is quickly becoming a place I don’t dread walking into.

The kitchen table on Thursday before cooking dinner.
That is a pretty sad state of things, isn’t it? For me to hate being in my home, to dread each day in it, instead of my home being my haven, my peaceful escape from the world.
On Thursday I also got busy in my bedroom. Here are a few during and after shots.

Clutter and messes around my boys' drawers

This is my desk area. You get creative in a crowded house.

My desk area looks a lot more tidy now!

The other side of the bed is looking lots better too!

A pretty piece of fabric over some boxes and a piece of shelving and Mama now has a place for her pretties!
Time and effort well spent! It was about time in a household of 4 boys that I got a place for my pretty things that is pretty to look at. Mama is feeling a lot better!

Just so you know, I am a homeschooling mum and I have 4 lovely boys to look after and lay love on. My fifteen minutes sometimes takes half an hour as I stop the timer to spend time meeting their needs. I won’t stop the timer to cook pancakes or to quickly watch a little of the movie my dh is watching but my kids deserve my attention 100%.
This session had a few pauses as the baby is hot and starting to get tired. Otherwise I multi-tasked dishes with cooking pancakes and eating and watching little snippets of The Matrix.

Another 15 minutes, doesn't look like much in the photo but it is getting done.

I know I have been working consistently on the kitchen over the last few days and the focus is really helping.
They say that when you set goals that one of the steps involved is to write it down, another is to share it with people who will be supportive.
Setting a rather public goal of getting my kitchen sorted is really helping to keep me focused. After seeing the results over just a few short sessions I am thinking that I should spread this focus to other areas such as my lounge room, laundry piles, the school room and our bedrooms. I will put the names of each room into a jar and pull one at random as I feel I will have time to do some focused work. Being random will mean no quick clean ups like just before visitors. This is going to be honest and in my face.
I want my home to be a place my family enjoys and a place I can be willing to invite friends into. Right now I have the typical CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome) syndrome. My goal is to have a clean tidy house where I feel at home.
I will achieve this 15 minutes at at time. Because 15 minutes does make a difference.

So another 15 minutes in the kitchen – more dishes! They are sort of critical you know!
Here is the before shot!

Notice the additional plastic plates, they are from our picnic set, no normal dishes were clean to eat off last night.
This morning I had to work mostly on the baking plastics. I want to do apple muffins for breakfast. Seeing as the day is hot I will also get my eldest to make a chocolate brownie to go in snack boxes and we will head somewhere air-conditioned for as long as possible.
The table looks lots better although I will be honest and admit that the plastic cups are soaking in the sink. Some had milk residue in them, yuk! I usually try to rinse them out after the boys are finished with them but it doesn’t always happen.
After 15 minutes -

Now I am starting to see a difference, yay!

Does 15 minutes make a difference? January 6, 2009

Here are some very honest photos of my kitchen – now do you see why I have an anonymous blog?

This is my kitchen table covered with dirty dishes before any work!
So after the timer went on for 15 minutes it didn’t seem to change much. I know I washed up lots of plastic containers but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference to the piles.

So after 15 minutes on the timer I have washed and put away one sink load. Doesn't look like much changed on the table!
Another 15 minutes with the timer getting paused a few times so I can cook dinner and take care of little people (there are 4 in my house after all) this is how the pile looks. Still not much difference but I know I am getting there even if you can’t see it.

So the timer has gone off twice, I have washed 2 sink loads, mostly plastics and some casserole dishes but this pile is not looking much smaller yet.
So does 15 minutes make a difference? I guess so! The pile did get bigger again after adding dinner dishes. But I still am ahead in that I washed more than we added even if you can’t see it.
Now, that was embarrassing but I am going to keep doing this. I need to change my household habits. If it takes embarrassing myself on the worldwide web to do it then let’s get going.
